Presentation

One way Unmatched stands apart from other games is the dedication to art. In InGen vs. Raptors, the new game board is colorfully printed with easily identifiable zones for combat, and both decks feature unique, stunning, and thematic artwork for each hero. Staying true to the concept of a crossover, each individual hero and their deck feel as if they were pulled directly from their source material and placed in an arena to battle one another. Unique to other heroes, the Raptors are each represented by their own unique miniature and treated as separate heroes. Each deck is incredibly thematic, featuring special abilities and card titles that include an abundance of references that fans of each hero are sure to appreciate.

Objective

In Unmatched: InGen vs. Raptors, the goal is to pick your favorite hero and use their unique playstyle and abilities to defeat all who oppose you. You must take two of the following actions each turn: maneuver, scheme, and attack. You may choose two different actions or the same action twice. Each card has a special effect or value, leading to exciting and unique engagements every time you play. The two maps also provide unique environments that you can use to your advantage. You can also mix and match characters and maps from other Unmatched game sets.

Gameplay

InGen vs. Raptors can be played 1v1 and a single match takes around 20 minutes. The basic mechanics might seem complicated at first glance, but they are easy to learn once you start playing. Some heroes do have more complicated mechanics than others, so there can be a learning curve. Fortunately, every card has specific instructions written on them, but you can always turn to the included rule book and our FAQ for more clarification.

In this set, Robert Muldoon commands his InGen workers to set traps around the battlefield to hinder the Raptors’ advances. Meanwhile, the Raptors hunt as a pack to surround their prey and attack together for maximum damage. The Raptors can take a little getting used to since they are 3 individual heroes working as one unit, but successfully pinning opponents is very satisfying. It might seem like it would be easy for the Raptors to overwhelm Muldoon, but his abundance of traps and his 3 InGen workers give him all the tools necessary to hunt them back. Both heroes have cards that are designed to counter each other, making for a well-balanced game.

Map: Raptor Paddock

The Raptor Paddock is based on the section of Jurassic Park where the Raptors escape and hunt the survivors. Visually the board does a good job of representing this with the small open area and forest regions surrounding the paddock itself. Around the paddock there are one-way arrows that only allow fighters to move in one direction indicated by the arrows; however, fighters can still attack between those spaces. Once inside the Paddock, there is only one way out. If not playing carefully, players can find themselves in a dangerous predicament. The zones around the paddock give the advantage to ranged fighters who hold their position outside of it, while the single escape option gives the advantage to melee heroes who trap others within.

“…And that’s when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side, from the other two raptors you didn’t even know were there. Because Velociraptor’s a pack hunter, you see. Try to show a little respect.” – Robert Muldoon

Robert Muldoon

The InGen workers are crack shots, each capable of attacking from range. Resourceful hunters, they lay down their traps to slow and wound their opponents. Their leader, Robert Muldoon has “hunted most things that can hunt you.”

Final Thoughts

InGen vs. Raptors introduces two icons of Jurassic Park. The Raptors are vicious and clever pack hunters who play to destroy their opponent at the first opportunity while Muldoon and InGen strategically set traps and maneuver around the battlefield to capture their prey. Both playstyles are diverse yet manage to stay balanced. Both heroes are wonderfully represented thematically and manage to fit in perfectly with the ever-growing roster of Unmatched.

Unmatched: InGen vs. Raptors is an excellent game on its own. Jurassic Park fans will have a blast with the art and multitude of references. Even people who simply love dinosaurs will find much to love here. When paired with the other editions, players have access to a massive variety of matchups that continue to grow with each new addition. This is an excellent addition to the Unmatched series and a must have for Unmatched enthusiasts and Jurassic Park fans alike.
